God Calls Us to Care for Those in Need
In today’s culture, we are taught to care for the nature around us, but not to care for the stranger. In a capitalist society, we learn that the strong ones survive but the weak ones perish. So we strive to be strong, better and fight for ourselves and for our rights. This is the way of the world’s systems. But the way of our God takes us on an entirely different course.
All throughout the scriptures, we see that the orphans, widows, and foreigners represent the weak ones of society. Yet instead of trampling them underfoot in order to get ahead, God instructs us to pause, consider their needs and even to go as far as to defend them.
Isaiah 1:17 says, “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” NKJV
These weaker ones, who cannot succeed in the battle within the free market, they are in need of our help and we must be mindful of them, protect them and care for their needs.
We are not animals living in a jungle where the strong ones consume the weak. We are made in the image of God whose heart is bent towards these weak ones.
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”NIV
We are all busy people with a lot of pressures coming at us from all angles. But maybe it’s time for us to re-evaluate our “religion” to see how it lines up with God’s word. When we put God’s kingdom first, and take the time to care for these forgotten ones that are close to His heart, He says He will care for our needs as well.
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33 NLT
God bless you.
